A small English studio with an individual approach
Lamplit is a small, independent English studio offering personalised one-to-one lessons and tuition for children and young people.
I teach reading, writing, grammar and literature, with each lesson built around the student—what they need help with, what interests them and where they would like to grow.
Each student has a programme of study shaped around their individual needs and strengths. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach.
Meet Ruaridh
A decade teaching internationally
I’m Ruaridh MacDermot (pronounced Rory), the founder and teacher behind Lamplit English Studio. I have spent a decade teaching children in the UK, China and Southeast Asia, working with students from a wide range of educational and cultural backgrounds.
I hold a first-class degree in Primary Education from Durham University, where I specialised in English, and a master’s degree with Distinction in International Children’s Rights and Development from King’s College London.

The age groups provide a useful guide to the skills and kinds of work I commonly teach, but no two students follow exactly the same programme.
Ages 6–8
English Foundations
For children who need secure foundations, focused support in a particular area or greater challenge beyond schoolwork. Suitable for native English speakers and students developing English as an additional language.

Weekly teaching and feedback
Lessons include detailed homework review, new teaching and guided practice, with a progress report after each four-lesson block.
